A High-Energy Dispatch from Lawrence High School’s Climate Action Club.
“We have a single mission: to protect the planet and hand it to the next generation.”
At Lawrence High School, these words are not just a slogan – they are our fuel. This year, we proudly launched our Climate Action Club, supported by the Greater Bengaluru Authority and CMCA, and joined a citywide movement that connects student action directly to Bengaluru’s evolving Climate Action and Resilience Plan (BCAP).
And what a launch it was.
The room buzzed with excitement as students, teachers, and civic leaders came together with one shared goal: to build a greener, more climate-ready Bengaluru. Our Managing Trustee, Ms. Pushpa Subbaiah, graced the occasion with her support, while our Principal, Mrs. Supriya Johnson, delivered an inspiring message about student leadership and unveiled our bold new club logo, a symbol of the responsibility we are taking on.

Connecting Our Campus to Bengaluru’s Climate Future
One of the most eye-opening sessions came from Mr. Suraj S.K., Local Climate Action and Civic Engagement Fellow at the Climate Action Cell. He introduced us to Greater Bengaluru Authority’s upcoming “Climate Atlas” – a digital tool that maps emissions, risks, and environmental indicators across the city.
For the first time, we could see exactly how our actions in school connect to the city’s big climate goals.
Our coordinator, Ms. Shruthi M, summed it up perfectly:
“This initiative is powerful because it connects student action to real change. We are not working in isolation – our club will feed into Bengaluru’s Climate Action Plan through data, audits, and on-ground projects.”
This is what makes the Climate Action Club different. Our projects – whether on waste, energy, water, greenery or civic awareness – will eventually feed into the Climate Action Cell’s planning and monitoring. We are literally becoming part of the city’s climate data and climate solutions.
Honouring Bengaluru’s Unsung Environmental Heroes
A deeply moving part of our launch was our tribute to the pourakarmikas, the workers who keep the city running every single day. Inspired by a story featured in The Hindu, we invited pourakarmikas to speak about their experiences. Hearing firsthand about the challenges of solid waste management completely changed how we view our own responsibilities.
We handed them thank-you cards and small tokens of appreciation – a simple gesture, but one that came straight from the heart.
A Club Full of Purpose (and Passion!)
At the launch, I decoded the meaning behind our club logo – it is a reminder that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility. We ended the launch with a vibrant Climate Action Pledge, a moment where we could almost feel the entire school leaning into a more sustainable future.
Students left energised and inspired:
“Being part of the Climate Action Club makes me feel like I’m contributing to something bigger,” VB Poorvi, Grade 7, said.
“The launch showed me that students can influence real change,” she added.
OUR FIRST WINS!
Even before our grand launch, we were already warming up for action. Here are two early projects we’re incredibly proud of:
1. Teachers’ Day Plastic Waste Drive
Teachers’ Day became a zero-waste celebration! Students collected single-use plastics from across the campus and ensured responsible disposal. A simple activity, but a strong demonstration of what climate-conscious celebrations can look like.
2. Eco-Friendly Paper Bag Challenge
Grades 5 -10 upcycled old newspapers into sturdy, creative paper bags. What started as a fun competition became an important reminder that recycling can be meaningful – and even stylish.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR LAWRENCE HIGH SCHOOL?
The excitement is real, and the plans are big.
Over the next year, our Climate Action Club will roll out:
Campus-Level Green Audits
We will measure waste, energy, water and greenery to understand our environmental footprint.
These findings will be shared with the Climate Action Cell, contributing to citywide data for Bengaluru’s Climate Action Plan.
Student-Led Sustainability Projects
From composting to plastic-free zones to water conservation systems – every idea counts.
Integration with the Bengaluru Climate Action Plan
Our audits and on-ground work will support BCAP goals around waste reduction, carbon management, climate awareness, and resilience planning.
Community Engagement
We’ll take our learning beyond the campus — into homes, neighbourhoods, and digital spaces.
As Ms. Shruthi says:
“We’re only at the beginning. The habits we build now will shape the city we inherit.”
TOGETHER, WE ARE BUILDING A GREENER BENGALURU

This isn’t just a club.
It’s a movement.
A chance for students to play a real, measurable role in Bengaluru’s climate journey.
One action.
One idea.
One student at a time.We are ready. We are determined.
And we are proud to call ourselves Bengaluru’s Climate Champions.
